“Jeremy Corbyn unveils plans for 'progressive' tax raid on homes and gardens of the middle class

Jeremy Corbyn has unveiled plans for a new tax raid on middle-class homeowners which will see those with larger family homes and gardens pay significantly more.

A new report, commissioned by Labour, suggests that council tax should be scrapped and replaced with a "progressive property tax".

The tax would be payable by property owners, rather than tenants, and would be based on "regularly updated" property values.

The report says there would be a "progressively higher rate of taxation" for each of top four property bands by value.

The proposed tax raid is one of a raft of policies being considered by Labour after the publication of a new report entitled "land for the many".”

It’s your fault for reading and believing the Torygraph. It’s not about gardens, it’s about home owners. The proposal is for it to replace Council Tax.

To discourage the use of homes as financial assets, reduce the tax paid by the majority of households, and encourage more efficient use of the housing stock, we recommend that a Labour government should replace the council tax with a progressive property tax (Chapter 3). This should be payable by owners, not tenants. The valuation of properties for tax purposes should be updated annually, and empty homes and second homes should automatically be taxed at a higher rate. We also recommend a surcharge for all properties owned by those who are not resident in the UK for tax purposes.

At what point does one become upper class so unaffected by this middle class tax?

Having a butler? Or member of Labour executive committee?

Repeal the Inclosure Acts and the upper classes will feel it.

I’d say right about now when the existing Council Tax upper band is charged the same no matter whether its a house that just scrapes inside the band, or a mansion out of reach of most.

There’s an argument that the services provided are the same, therefore there’s no justification for a progressive increase.

There’s also an argument that those that can pay more should pay proportionally more.

Pay for what you use and bring back the poll tax rather than looking into ways of raiding the bank of mam and dad who'll end up with nothing for their young to pilfer Corbyn is still living in the 70's and fighting the cold war on behalf of comrades, talk about the irony of bleating on about Russian interference in modern elections! Do they not realise that working class white van man is the new middle class with the big house and gardens and fat daughter and wayward son milking the estate

As it happens, I'm registered to vote in a Labour / Tory marginal.
