    That and the cost of car parking. Councils and their short sighted policies are mostly to blame for the high street's demise. People blame online shopping, but the high street was on its knees well before online shopping became so popular.

        Agreed. Often we drive into the centre of Munich and I'm aghast it only costs us €1.5 an hour. On our return to Edinburgh recently we used the NCP carpark, £5 per hour Of course nadda to do with the council. Then the next day we used on-street parking, £3 per hour.

        The death of retail on an economy that is arguably driven by retail will make the up and coming recession all the worse.

              Our office business rates are about double, zero relation to rent - there should be like VAT on actual rent paid, not some imaginary number valuation officer thinks is right
