John Swinney, the Scottish education secretary and deputy first minister, said fluctuations in results were acceptable. “These are a strong set of results which show a degree of year on year variation expected in a high-performing education system with credible assessment,” he said.

“If the pass rate only ever went up people would rightly question the robustness of our assessment system.”

Well he WOULD say that, wouldn't he? A desperate attempt at deflection that only gullible brainwashed dimwits would take at face value........Batcher for example.

there was now an established trend of declining results in schools, due entirely to cuts in teacher numbers, budgets and in subject choice.
Going backwards on the SNPs watch. Still, I suppose it is all the fault of Westminster.

          What a surprise...

Pisa: Mixed report for Scottish education in world rankings - BBC News

Notice that the Scottish article has to say "The Pisa report is not definitive and the system has many critics within education" as they will get complaints from the Scottish government until they put in some kind of get out.

Not sure how you can ever win with this one.

Grade attainment heads upwards, folk shout "exams are getting easier! It wasn't like this in my day!"

Grade attainment heads downwards, folk shout "the government are failing our childrennnnnnnnnnnn!"

OECD average attainment will consolidate over the years, by definition, as advanced fully developed countries plateau and then have variable results within specific upper boundaries over the years; as other countries also then have an upwards trajectory in attainment - first a rapid rise, which then slows in much the same way, it's normal to see such results. The fully developed countries then see trends aiming towards the average rather than continuing ever-upwards. Without bringing much poorer countries into the OECD classification then the trend will always be towards the OECD average.

Having researched in the past I see no fixed method for determining whether children are being educated better/worse/the same versus examination marking stringency being the same/worse/better, so it seems like horses for courses.

It's called balance. There are many critics as well as proponents within the education sector. From your many (many, manyyyy) posts on this forum it's obvious balance and clarity is not something you rely on; you prefer rhetoric and jumping to conclusions - the usual hallmark of a childish mindset unable to comprehend that the world is a complex place and your one-size-fits-all mindset doesn't work, never has and never will.
