Bellingcat already showed photos of remains from a tor missile earlier today. Which they are trying to geolocate.

Indeed. Why would you even have an anti-aircraft missile system in the vicinity of a pubic airport?

What of all the other aircraft taking off from the airport today? Why not take a poke at them too?

Do shot down planes make controlled attempts of returning to the airport?

Why is the US to believed on its version of events?

Why did other commercial aircraft in the vicinity not fall to the same fate?

Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation (CAOI) chief Ali Abedzadeh said: "The plane, which was initially headed west to leave the airport zone, turned right following a problem and was headed back to the airport at the moment of the crash."

Mr Abedzadeh added that witnesses saw the plane "on fire" before the crash, and that pilots had not made any distress calls before trying to return to Imam Khomeini airport.

"Several domestic and foreign flights were flying in Iranian space at the same altitude of 8,000ft (2,400m). The issue of the missile's impact on the aircraft cannot be true in any way," he said.

Due to expected counter attack AA units were delegated to make decisions on tactical level without approval from HQ (as in event of attack approval may arrive too late), civilian foreign aircraft won’t have foe-friend chips, so some eager PoS shot it down...

is this thread sponsored by an aluminium foil company, by any chance?

          for the compulsory headgear?

Doubt very much the aircraft's transponder was switched off unless there was a complete power failure. However there's two electrical supplies feeding the transponder not to mention an internal battery.

Furthermore! If you're going to shoot down a target, you shoot down an approaching target not a departing one.

I don't think there's any implication that the transponder was off - certainly, the FlightRadar track would imply otherwise - but the Iranian aircraft the Yanks shot down was also squawking correctly. Unless we're saying the incident happened after the output stopped - guess you'd need a recording for the Type 1 RADAR to see.

What it definitely wouldn't have had is an IFF response, assuming the Iranians were even interrogating. Unfortunately there's no tech to prove you're a civvie flight.

I don't think there's any implication that Iran meant to do it, but humans are notoriously bad at decision making under pressure. We misread, we interest facts wrongly, we jumpy to conclusions and make the pieces fit it.

Some jumpy 20 year old who thinks they're on the cusp of WWIII sees an unknown contact. May his SSR was faulty, maybe it wasn't on, maybe he didn't have any ot maybe it it overlaid the data beautifully complete with ADS-B out or indeed maybe the transponder had gone tech. Either way, it's not a stretch to imagine they panicked, the flight wasn't on his list and he hit the button.

It's not beyond the realm of reason and it almost exactly mirrors the other shoot down.

These are not gonna be super highly trained people with state of the art equipment, acting like they do in a simulation.

I mean FFS, look at the amount of Blue on Blue from the yanks we've had to put up with.

More to the point, I don't think anybody in the world expects a full and transparent investigation from Iran.

Erm, in the army in those countries shooting and failing to hit is ok, but not shooting could end up badly
