Coronavirus: UK could be 'worst affected' country in Europe

Grim reading. However, no one should be surprised of the inept government.

Remember a couple of month ago, time will tell, said the newspapers - whose approach was right, testing & lockdown or heard immunity.

The UK's death toll from coronavirus could be the worst in Europe, one of the government's senior scientific advisers has said.

Wellcome Trust director Sir Jeremy Farrar told the BBC the UK was likely to be "one of the worst, if not the worst affected country in Europe".

In response, Business Secretary Alok Sharma said countries were on "different trajectories".

It comes as UK deaths from the virus are expected to pass 10,000 on Sunday.

On Saturday, the UK recorded 917 new coronavirus deaths, taking the total number of deaths with the virus in hospitals to 9,875. The figure does not include deaths outside of hospitals, such as in care homes or in the community.

Ministers are continuing to urge people to stay at home over the Easter weekend to curb the spread of the virus, despite warm and sunny weather across parts of the UK.

Earlier the prime minister said he owed his life to the NHS staff treating him for coronavirus.

Boris Johnson remains in hospital, where he continues to recover after spending three nights in intensive care.

Germany has kept deaths below 3,000 so far.

Sir Jeremy, a member of the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show the "remarkable" scale of testing in Germany had been key to keeping the number of hospital admissions for coronavirus lower than in the UK.

Sir Jeremy said testing allowed countries to isolate people with Covid-19, preventing them from transmitting the virus to others, as well as buying time for hospitals to prepare.

"Undoubtedly there are lessons to learn from that," he added.

The UK government has said it wants to do 100,000 coronavirus tests a day by the end of April but has faced criticism for not increasing the number more quickly.

The government isn't inept and is doing the best they can. I'm impressed by the Nightingale hospitals and distribution systems put in place. Sweden is doing herd immunity and have lowish rates of infection and death but completely different demographics and population distribution characteristics. It's not surprising that a virus hits heavily populated areas and culturally close communities hardest such as the large UK cities. There's no cure so you get it and survive or die and the older you are especially 60+ the risk of death increases. All any government is currently doing is flattening the curve to provide time to build resources and develop tests and vaccines. At some point they'll start lifting the restrictions, probably end of May, then there'll be another spike of infection worldwide but we may have the resources to cope. Comparing the damn statistical lies with widely varying data sources does no one any good. Or is your hobby simply slagging off the UK government?

It's not his hobby. It's his addiction.

Let's face it Scoots. You're loving the fact that the UK is close to a 1000 deaths per day.

You spend a huge amount of time and effort looking for any news story that you can post on here to "prove" how terrible the UK is. You post negative crap every day and have done so for years.

You just have not got over the Scottish referendum and BREXIT results.

If the results of this pandemic had played out differently in the UK you would not have been praising the result, you'd have been looking for a reason as to why it didn't count.

Sweden has had more deaths then the rest of the other Nordic countries put together.

So yeah the Swedes are doing great....

Pretty much what I said in the Stock Market thread. Scoots hunts down all the negative news he can find and posts it here, as though we so naïve to believe the rubbish he spouts, or as though we actually give a damn as to what his view is. He actually seems to enjoy the bad news - it helps his "investments". A very sad individual who is incapable of listening to other points of view and has nothing to add on any of the professional forums.

When I worked at Golmine Sucks, I was asked what I thought. I told them they were perfect. They pushed me to give them anything to could do better. Always trying to improve.

I know the UK is not perfect. But it is close. Hence I welcome Scooter's help in giving the UK to improve things here.

                  Please keep it up.

Doing the best they can isn’t good enough - those tulips did not prep for it, cut pennies to lose lives and hundreds of billions: this is criminal
