My personal view is someone should be judged by the norms of their time. The slave trader while abhorrent by today's standards broke no laws of the time and was a great philanthropist in comparison to the norms of the time.
Will the buildings he funded in Bristol now be pulled down as they were paid for with dirty money or any of the buildings from the 17th-19th century? Or is it convenient for Bristolians to erase why they have great architecture in their city and believe their city had nothing to do with the slave trade or the profit from the colonies? Will his statue be replaced by a memorial to the slave trade and Bristol's involvement in it and the people of Bristol asking for forgiveness on behalf of their ancestors who profited from it?Last edited by BlueSharp; 8 June 2020, 08:49.Make Mercia Great Again!Comment

While the UK has a racist PM, nothing will get changed:
It is said that the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies. No doubt the AK47s will fall silent, and the pangas will stop their hacking of human flesh, and the tribal warriors will all break out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief touch down in his big white British taxpayer-funded bird. All the young people I know – ie those under 30 – are just as avaricious as we flinty Thatcherite yuppies of the 1980s in fact, they have an almost Nigerian interest in money and gadgets of all kinds. The best fate for Africa would be if the old colonial powers, or their citizens, scrambled once again in her direction; on the understanding that this time they will not be asked to feel guilty.Asked if a 'bunch of black kids' would 'make him turn a hair', he replied: If that is racial prejudice, then I am guilty.“Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.”Comment

Originally posted by Old Greg View PostIndeed, if one statue is removed, then perhaps the whole of Bristol will be demolished and its white population sold into slavery. That's exactly how slippery slopes work.
Bristol does like to cleanse its history, they have previous form. Perhaps Britons biggest slave port should seek forgiveness for the wrongs their ancestors did to the black community and build a monument to all those who died while the city boomed? Or is it more politically convenient to just remove all trace of Britons biggest slave port's history and ignore it ever happened?Last edited by BlueSharp; 8 June 2020, 09:11.Make Mercia Great Again!Comment
