Wouldn't have made much difference here either given around 50% of deaths have been in care homes where, let's face it, the majority of the population do not go inside and where there are masks (although initially clearly in short supply).

When the dust settles the government and the NHS leaders will have a lot of questions to answer, not least why untested but suspected virus cases were being sent back into the care homes. Seems we have sacrificed those in the care environment to protect the NHS (to make the Tories look good?)

Also a very high % of deaths are the disabled who have been very much ignored and forgotten in all this. Those who rely on home care have been mostly abandoned during all this. Very sad how we have treated those most vulnerable in society when we knew from day one that they would be the most at risk and that healthy individuals would be least impacted.

Maybe if we have a 2nd wave we can learn from these mistakes, although I fear not as Bojo and his pals are driven by their politocal aims and not by doing the right thing.
They haven't protected the NHS though.

The number of cancer deaths in the coming year and long waiting lists will show this.

The whole thing was a complete tulipstorm due to a PM who did lockdown too late.

This photo is currently on the bbc website which I think perfectly highlights why masks create more problems than they are worth and just goes to show how people throw social distancing to the curb when they wear them... Look how close the worker and the couple are...

Its exactly why southern states are seeing huge issues despite most wearing masks. My friends live in the Florida and they are saying the vast majority do wear them but they are making no difference as people have stopped distancing.

          That's Trump level BS.

          People there:

          1. Did not wear masks
          2. Hit the bars hard, nevermind social distancing

Obviously masks don't negate the need to social distance (when possible), strong leadership is needed to stress that point, US is lacking it, real American tragedy is happening right now.

Well you clearly know more than the locals sitting in your Semi-Detached house in Swindon....

You are taking reports about certain ultra Trump supporting republicans and some young people (same all over the world) feeling in invincible as being the be all and end all of the spread of the virus. The level of transmission they are going through goes well beyond that minority.

You did manage to get something right... Masks do not negate the need to socially distance and that is the problem. People wearing masks are feeling like they no long need to distance. Its happening here - every super market visit the ones wearing masks just do as they please.

The news today is attempting to suggest that masks protect others and now suggesting it offers protection to the person wearing it as well. The masks wearers will feel even more invincible.

I hope in the UK we keep saying distance over masks.

Masks can give one a false sense of security, because the virus is so small that it can pass through a mask like a bumblebee flying through an orchard!

Perhaps a good wheeze would be to develop an electrostatically charged mask, with a small power pack, that would actively repel water droplets?

There is plenty of video footage from Florida showing feck all were wearing masks on the beaches, around bars etc - most people who got infected now are much younger than before, so it's entirely possible older people in Florida had more sense and worn masks, but that's not helping if enough idiots do stupid things.

Should be distance AND masks - that's the winning combination.

Who the hell is going to wear a mask on the beach in the fresh air ? You don't have to wear them in bars as long as you distance. There are obviously some bars and people who aren't being sensible but you take that as all of them ?? You can't get in Disney Springs / Universal without one. You can't get in Wallmart, you can't get in most shops all over the state without them. That is the reality.

I bet you fall for everything in the Daily Mail as well ? You watch a video of a beach taken at an angle to make it look really bad and then your convinced - that must be all people everywhere

I think you need to slow down a little bit, engage your brain and think for yourself a little. Stop letting the media spoon feed you for a moment

                      Distance and masks where appropriate.

I went Alton Towers at the weekend... No need for masks in a socially distanced queue line (and it was) and then you put it on when you get on the ride. Sensible...
