Britain ‘lags way behind’ in wearing face masks, scientists say

"Senior scientists issued an urgent call on Tuesday for Britons to protect themselves and others against coronavirus infection by wearing face coverings, which they said had a much lower uptake in the UK than in the US and elsewhere in Europe."

It's shocking really that mask is not required for any shopping - feck all people wearing them (I do), it's like one of the easiest cheapest way to cut down on spread, but even in the US with idiot President more people wear masks than in the UK, WTF?!?!?

Is there evidence that face coverings are effective against Covid-19?

Yes, but it (non medical grade masks, which still in short supply) works more asymmetrically: reduces a lot spread of virus, rather than giving perfect protection, but this good protection is still achieved IF vast majority wear masks.

They are already requires on transport, so why not inside shops?

Face masks may be fine for foreigners, but we're British thank God!

Pubs really should give a straw to drink it with mask on, better be safe than sorry...

                Yes.
Proper face masks prevent the spread of infection to others by capturing your germs as you breathe out.

This is why they are hated by Trump supporters - a mask is not to protect you, but to protect others. Doing something that helps others is communism by the back door, and therefore must be stopped at all costs.

Not really helping the US though is it?

Wouldn't have made much difference here either given around 50% of deaths have been in care homes where, let's face it, the majority of the population do not go inside and where there are masks (although initially clearly in short supply).

When the dust settles the government and the NHS leaders will have a lot of questions to answer, not least why untested but suspected virus cases were being sent back into the care homes. Seems we have sacrificed those in the care environment to protect the NHS (to make the Tories look good?)

Also a very high % of deaths are the disabled who have been very much ignored and forgotten in all this. Those who rely on home care have been mostly abandoned during all this. Very sad how we have treated those most vulnerable in society when we knew from day one that they would be the most at risk and that healthy individuals would be least impacted.

Maybe if we have a 2nd wave we can learn from these mistakes, although I fear not as Bojo and his pals are driven by their politocal aims and not by doing the right thing.

It helps a lot in those states who are not run by morons (like Texas, Florida), say New York gone through hell but they got vast majority of people wearing masks, it makes massive difference is take up is high (95%+).

How the fook it's still legal to be on the street without wearing mask, nevermind inside buildings like supermarkets! There is no supply shortage of simple masks, they are cheap.
