    Cost of cambelt change?

Need to get the cambelt changed on my 13-year old TT. (It's 8 years since it was last done, and it's supposed to be done every 5 years, so it's way overdue. If the belt fails it can cause catastrophic ££££ engine damage because it's an interference engine.)

They advise changing the water pump, pulleys etc at the same time.

Before I start ringing round for quotes, does anyone know what a reasonable ballpark price would be?

    400 to 800.

Nice hairdresser's car, is it the standard gray?

Yes, you'd change all the rubber belts etc at the same time as they're generally all the same age. The water pump gets done because I think you'd need to get the cam belt off to change it anyway so makes sense to not have to repeat the cam belt work should the pump go at a later date.

The local Audi dealer has quoted £745 for parts, labour and VAT. It came with an offer:

"Should you decide to have your cam belt & water pump replaced with us, you will benefit from FREE MOT's for the cars life at any Audi centre in the UK."

        I suspect that's not a free lunch.

I recently changed the timing belt and water pump on my A3 at an independent specialist: ~£450 ex VAT. Roughly 50/50 split parts and labour.

It's cheaper than not changing it. #bitterexperience

You are all well paid contractors, just take it to Audi and get it done, why even ask how much it costs?

Simply look angry when you get the bill and say "I thought Audi were supposed to be expensive! Even permies could afford these prices!"

It will take a garage three to four hours to change a cam-belt, water-pump, pulleys and auxiliary belt. Parts will cost about £150 retail or £80 trade.

It is important to change everything because if for example the water-pump bearing fails, it will snap the belt and damage the engine. I lost an engine some years ago because the garage incorrectly fitted the auxiliary belt that eventually shredded and caught up on the cam-belt. For that reason, I change the belts my self so that I am sure they are done properly.

£745 is a bit steep, but you need a trustworthy garage to do it.

Any garage offering a "free" MOT should be an immediate no.
