      Not surprising at all since it isn't a job that's required to keep the company alive. It's just a nice flashy new thing. Most companies don't even know what data science is but just know it's new and everyone is telling them they need it.

              I've got 15 years of Quantum Computing programming experience using augmented reality using blockchain based AI, and still haven't hooked a gig yet.

                Not all companies are in survival mode, some are doing very nicely at the moment.

                I'm not sure if Data Scientist is still the 'sexiest job of the 21st century' but long term, I reckon the employment prospects for data scientists and IT management are probably a lot better than IT Operations and Help Desk or even software development.
