New Smart traffic lights will turn green for cyclists | Daily Mail Online

New Smart traffic lights go green for cyclists: AI tech that prioritises two wheels over four is set for trials at junctions in London and three other cities (despite many bikers ignoring red lights anyway)

    • New technology will be tested in Wolverhampton, Coventry and Southampton
    • It uses video cameras and artificial intelligence to detect approaching cyclists
    • Now Wireless said system deals with reality that cyclists often ignore red lights
at his age he needs them stationary so he can get a clean shot.

The idea for this is to force everyone who doesn't need to use a motorised vehicle to get around by other methods to decrease air pollution. The government doesn't want any more findings like this as they could end up being sued.

Oh I completely agree government have failed to deal with this for decades. We aren't quite like Detroit was but our air is hardly mountain pure.

Of course we now expect cyclists to exercise in lethal smog.

So creating ever longer queues of stationary traffic waiting for a green light improves air pollution how, exactly...? Trucks and buses tend not to have stop/start engines, after all.

Also, since lights are at junctions, what if two cyclists are approaching from both roads? Which one gets to ignore the red light?

Still, it keeps some people in work I suppose.
        Blog? What blog...?

          Yeah that's absolutely tragic.

During the first few weeks of lockdown you could actually breathe the air in central London. It was really nice to get a break, didn't choke on the diesel like normal.

I don't think this is the solution though. Need something way more aggressive.

What do you mean when you say we? London is worse than detroit.

Undertakers, you mean? It's not as if they have little else to do at the moment. Will they have this system at pedestrian crossings? Something else to keep the old folks locked up indoors for fear of imminent death...

They get it to work in The Netherlands so pedestrians can cross as well.

In fact a couple of London junctions have traffic lights like the Dutch ones.

Agreed, pretty stupid idea. We have a 'green' parliament in town and they keep comin gup with some stupid ideas. The main city ring used be so that you would get a 'green wave' when driving down it so that all traffic lights would be green as you approached them keeping the traffic flowing, now you have to stop at every one. The tunnel under the town used to be 50kmh but is now 30kmh so every bugger goes slow taking more time to get through the town causing more cars to stop and drive slower causing more pollution. There's a lot more...one of the things they have here once a month is loads of cyclists (and for some reason, inline skaters) carouse through the town on all the main roads, they require a police escort and cause a huge tailback so the traffic just causes more pollution (I stand by the pedestrian crossing and press the button so that the green man comes on and if any ****wit cyclist decides they can cycle through the red light I'm out there in front of them like a jiffy!)
