Covid: Merkel warns of 'long, hard winter' as lockdowns returns

There was a time we'd hear such statesmanship from a British PM. My goodness, how the tables have turned.

"This pandemic brings the question of freedom to the fore. Freedom is not 'every man for himself', it is responsibility - for oneself, one's family, the workplace. It shows us we are part of a whole," she said.
The message was clear without being authoritative yet delivered the importance needed if we're to beat this hellish situation.

Yet back home we've got a waffling idiot advising people to inform the police on their neighbours flouting the rules whilst they do so themselves.

Consensus is the point. If we can all agree on a common interest for our common benefit then we remove this hellish situation from out everyday lives sooner than that. Disrupting it with populist drivel is a sure fire way to sow confusion rather than provide an effective response.

Same old arguments being had though:

The AfD parliamentary group leader, Alexander Gauland, criticised the lack of parliamentary involvement in deciding upon the measures, equating Mrs Merkel's leadership with "a coronavirus dictatorship".

"A coronavirus dictatorship on revocation is incompatible with our free and democratic basic order," he said, adding that Germany's hard-won freedoms were too valuable "to be checked into the cloakroom of [Merkel's] emergency cabinet".
Angela Merkel heckled in German parliament after warning against Covid 'lies and disinformation'

I also remember seeing the state leaders weren't fully on board with all of the government's proposals.

Maybe Merkel puts things across better but Germany aren't necessarily more unified than the UK.

You mean like how the same Tory government spent the 4 years prior dividing the nation over Brexit?

If there's one thing that's a certain fact it's that there is no consensus or common interest. Division along numerous and varied arbitrary lines is the order of the day in today's post-truth Britain.

Oh gosh they are and then some. I know of no German families divided down the middle with political turmoil like B.

Sure Bavaria has been trying for independence for ages. But that's not going to happen.

Consensus for who? If populist opinion differs then how do you have a consensus? or do you just means a consensus amoung the elite/ruling class?

One would have thought that consensus for survival would be most popular thing during one in a hundred years emergency event
