Three activists scale Parliament calling for slavery reparations to be paid | Daily Mail Online

Three activists scale Parliament calling for slavery reparations to be paid with huge banner signed by XR and Black Lives Matter - the day after stunt at nearby Cenotaph

    • Three activists hung note 'to the People of the United Kingdom' from scaffolding
    • It demanded 'honest acknowledgement of the harm and human cost of slavery'
    • The document also said that there should be a 'cancellation of all African debt'
    • It comes three weeks after demonstrator dressed as Spiderman got into the area
    • It's called into question Met's security after XR protested at Cenotaph yesterday
Good to see security is tight!

What sort of reparations do they want to be paid? £1M each? A free ticket to their homeland of choice?

I suggest we match whatever the Arabs/Indians/Chinese (and previous slavers) pay as they were buying unknown numbers of Africans from their brothers since the 7th century and more after the Arabs stopped raiding Europe as we were too difficult to capture.

The East African slave trade | The East Indies | The Places Involved | Slavery Routes | Bristol and Transatlantic Slavery | PortCities Bristol.

The Europeans didn't start buying slaves from Africa until the 14th century. Apparently ~90% of the African slaves were captured & sold by an enemy tribe. Portraying themselves as only victims is hard to support.

Maybe multiple tariffs charged to each guilty party makes sense.

      1. Slave captured by non native died prematurely in captivity.
      2. Slave captured by fellow countryman and sold into slavery died prematurely.
      3. As 1 but died in old age.
      4. as 2 but died in old age.
      5. as 1 but freed
      6. as 2 but freed.

We obviously need to index link the reward which should bankrupt the Italians, Greeks, Egyptians and Persians before the UAE sells up. Capturing slaves is obviously the most grievous injury as the other offences follow.

As 4 out of five slaves sold to the Arabs died on the journey compared to 1 in 5 for the British that will hurt.

I think we also need reparations for misogyny, race discrimination and millennia of raping the earth.

Or we could just realise slavery was the world's third oldest profession and was legal everywhere (until we banned it)

Throughout much of the area, though, slavery remained legal until a country came under European rule (for example Egypt in 1882) or until the country tried to join the League of Nations after the 1st World War (for example, Saudi Arabia).
at the time of the slave trade.

We need to move on, obliterate slavery and fix Africa etc where their development has been delayed whether or not it was the result of empire or years of in fighting that has characterised Africa since we left.

After a quick look an article in 2005 says that's about $350 bn... Christ knows what that is in todays money plus increased borrowing. They owe Chain $150 bn so safe to say 350 is way out...

So let the UK pay that? Riiiight.. Nice one.

There must be a substantial amount of back pay owed to those who should benefit from the estates of those enslaved. Calculate it at an assumed number of hours per week at the then market rate for a farm labourer, domestic servant etc. Work out what the liability sum is first, and then work out who the beneficiaries and liable parties are.

Whether / how to enforce it is fantasy politics, but it would be fun to to the first para, just for the triggering of gammonflakes and their fellow travellers.

We're all slaves to life. I want my repatriations now, not for some better off future generation to make a claim thinking they are owed something they ain't doing the suffering over.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Which bit of it was legal at the time and everyone was doing it did you miss?

If you want to calculate back pay then do it for everyone. Spartacus is probably entitled to a few quid as are the Israelites.

if you do that African kings that sold their enemies into slavery will be bankrupt before we get past the 14th century. It is all or nothing.

If your great, great grandfather was in the workhouse are you due reparations? If your ancestors were apprentices do you get some cash.

Dig history and you will find that that over many centauries, the monarchy plundered and confiscated land and turned the owners into surfs and peasants and later threw farmers off their land and move them to towns.

The monarchy got rich by plundering and murder, just like the mafia. All our ancestors suffered in the UK, Ireland and the Empire.

War crimes legislation is sometimes retrospective, but clearly you are OK with historical war crimes as long as they were legal at the time and everyone was doing it.

OK if we make it illegal it becomes illegal for everyone. Be careful what you wish for!

Then let us prosecute everyone as I suggested but by the time African royalty started paying the slaves they captured and sold in the first few centuries their debt would be much bigger than 350Billion.

Italy, Greece & Egypt would also be bankrupt.

Are British slaves worth more than Africans? Should we exchange the reparations?

When Britons Were Slaves In Africa: The People Enslaved By Barbary Pirates - HistoryExtra

The Barbary corsair enterprise, which included not only taking European ships, goods and captives at sea but also raiding coastal settlements, was far larger than many people imagine. Estimates are that, across three centuries, corsairs operating out of Barbary coast ports (in north Africa) captured and enslaved more than a million Europeans. It is difficult to evaluate the cost of the goods they stole and destroyed, but it was enormous. We also know that a significant proportion of those taken captive – and of the treasure seized was British.
The Transatlantic Slave Trade: A Brief Guide & Timeline - HistoryExtra

On their tentative explorations of the African coast in the 15th century, Europe’s emergent maritime powers, led by the Portuguese, found sources of gold and of slave labour, both bought and exchanged from African traders. Their initial trade in slaves developed between different African societies. But a hostile environment, and especially disease, prevented Europeans (with a few notable exceptions) establishing settlements in Africa.
