US pharmacist who tried to ruin Covid vaccine doses is a conspiracy theorist, police say | US news | The Guardian

A Wisconsin pharmacist who was convinced the world was “crashing down” told police he tried to ruin hundreds of doses of coronavirus vaccine because he believed the shots would mutate people’s DNA, according to court documents released on Monday.

Police in Grafton, about 20 miles north of Milwaukee, arrested Steven Brandenburg of Advocate Aurora Health last week after an investigation into the 57 spoiled vials of the Moderna vaccine, which officials say contained enough doses to inoculate more than 500 people. Charges are pending.

“He’d formed this belief they were unsafe,” Adam Gerol, the Ozaukee county district attorney, said during a virtual hearing. The prosecutor added that Brandenburg was upset because he was in the midst of divorcing his wife, and an Aurora employee said Brandenburg had taken a gun to work twice.

A detective wrote in a probable cause statement that Brandenburg, 46, was an admitted conspiracy theorist and that he told investigators he intentionally tried to ruin the vaccine because it could hurt people by changing their DNA.

Misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccines has surged online with false claims circulating on everything from the vaccines’ ingredients to possible side-effects.

One of the earliest false claims suggested that the vaccines could alter DNA. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine as well as the Moderna vaccine rely on messenger RNA or mRNA, which is a fairly new technology used in vaccines that experts have been working on for years.

Such vaccines help train the immune system to identify the spike protein on the surface of the coronavirus and create an immune response. Experts have said there is no truth to the claims that the vaccines can genetically modify humans.

Jeff Bahr, the Advocate Aurora Health Care chief medical group officer, has said Brandenburg admitted that he deliberately removed the vials from refrigeration at the Grafton medical center overnight on 24 December into 25 December, returned them, then left them out again on the night of 25 December into Saturday.

A pharmacy technician discovered the vials outside the refrigerator on 26 December.

Brandenburg’s attorney, Jason Baltz, did not speak on the merits of the case during the hearing. Gerol held off on filing any charges, saying he still needed to determine whether Brandenburg actually destroyed the doses.

Judge Paul Malloy ordered Brandenburg held on a $10,000 signature bond on the condition that he surrender his firearms, not work in healthcare and have no contact with Aurora employees.

Brandenburg is in the process of divorcing his wife of eight years. The couple has two small children.

According to an affidavit Brandenburg’s wife filed, he visited her on 6 December and dropped off a water purifier and two 30-day supplies of food, telling her the world was “crashing down”.

He had also said the government was planning cyber-attacks and was going to shut down the power grid.

She added that he was storing food in bulk along with guns in rental units and she no longer felt safe around him.

London Assembly member David Kurten branded ‘irresponsible and reckless’ for rejecting Covid vaccine | Evening Standard

A London Assembly member has been accused of spreading anti-vaccination propaganda after encouraging people not to take the Covid-19 jab.

In a tweet David Kurten accused the “MSM” — mainstream media — of downplaying any side effects of the jab, and said he would not be taking it.

It is thought Mr Kurten, who earns almost £60,000 a year as an assembly member for the Heritage Party, was referring to the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which has been approved for use in countries including the UK and the US after regulators found it was 95 per cent effective.

His comments were roundly criticised by fellow London politicians including Conservative mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey, who described them as “irresponsible and reckless”.

In his tweet on Monday, Mr Kurten said: “I will not be taking an experimental Covid vaccine and I am not recommending it.”

In safety trials, the US Food and Drug Agency found the proportion of those receiving the Pfizer jab to suffer “serious adverse effects” was 0.6 per cent, compared to 0.5 per cent in the placebo group.

Earlier this month, people in the UK with a history of significant allergic reactions were advised against receiving the Pfizer vaccine, and similar guidance has been issued in the US.

Len Duvall, leader of the Labour Group on the London Assembly, said Mr Kurten, a former chemistry teacher, was “acting irresponsibly”.

He told the Standard: “What about the tens of thousands of people who have lost their lives and the thousands more who will die if they do not take the vaccine?

“No one is being forced to have the vaccine and freedom of choice is important. But he should keep his views to himself rather than thinking he knows best rather than the experts.”

Mr Bailey said: “I am horrified by this tweet spreading anti-vac propaganda across Twitter. This is irresponsible and reckless - and most importantly this puts both lives and livelihoods at risk.

On December 21 Boris Johnson revealed that more than 500,000 people in the UK had received the Pfizer vaccine.

Mr Kurten is a former UKIP Parliamentary candidate who left the group in January to found the Heritage Party. The Standard has tried to contact him for comment.

The Heritage Party’s website reads: "We stand for free speech and liberty, traditional family values and financial responsibility."

According to the Government’s Covid dashboard there were 21,286 people in hospital with coronavirus on December 22. This is slightly less than the 21,683 recorded on April 12.

Meanwhile the London Ambulance Service (LAS) saw near record numbers of calls on Boxing Day.

The 7,918 calls received by London Ambulance Service (LAS) on December 26 was up more than 2,500 on the 5,217 received on the same day last year, and medics are receiving support from other ambulance services in the South.

LAS said in a statement: “Like NHS organisations across the country, demand for our services has risen sharply over the past weeks and we are now taking up to 8,000 999 calls a day compared to 5,500 on a typical ‘busy’ day.

Long ago it was one person with a placard wandering around saying the End Is Nigh.

Now social media has facilitated these loons into an online army.

      Scary stuff.

He had a negative bluety on a quackhandle and was quadraspazzed on a lifeglug.

I look forward to your all knowing and likely sarcastic and unhelpful reply.
