Whats is the magic with chickens ?

    chickens coming home to roost
dont count your chickens before they hatch
why did the chicken cross the road
    rare as hens teeth
what came first the chicken or the egg

personally I find them boring little creatures

We started keeping them this year, they're quite good fun actually, but they do tend to die on you.
Cooking doesn't get tougher than this.

No I would not give you false hope
On this strange and mournful day
But the mother and child reu-nion
Is only a motion away, oh, little darling of mine.
I cant for the life of me
          Remember a sadder day
I know they say let it be
But it just dont work out that way
And the course of a lifetime runs
          Over and over again

I just cant believe its so,
And though it seems strange to say
I never been laid so low
          In such a mysterious way
And the course of a lifetime runs

          Is only a motion away
Oh the mother and child reu-nion
          Is only a moment away

No, we don't eat our chickens, but there's no reason you couldn't. They're pets for us, and we are happy enough with all the free range eggs.

They shouldn't. Have a life span of about 4 1/2 years IIRC. Are they dying of predation, disease, or poisoning?

I can't remember if TBYJ has rescued battery hens or not...but they tend to die quite young - due to the stresses from the battery farming.

My gardener has a few and loses the ex battery ones quite regularly.

One died of heatstroke, the other was a rescue and had a tumor.

The more you have (we have about 15) the more will die in any one year from a variety of causes.
