Before my parents married mum lived in a flat in Balham, actually over Balham Tube Station, owned by the then British Rail. Grandad was station master at Paddington and the flat came with the job.
Dad's parents owned their own home but once he joined the Navy he moved into officers quarters in Portsmouth.

I grew up living in Army Married Quarters in various parts of the UK and Germany.
When my dad left the Army he joined the prison service so my teenage years were spent in prison service married quarters.
My parents bought their own place in the early 80's then sold it the year after because they couldn't afford it. Back to prison service married quarters it was.
