Dead end tools and technologies you wished you hadn't bothered with

Here's a list of some things I put a lot of time and effort into learning and resulted in very little reward.

Visual InterDev. Why did I bother with this croc?
VB6 WebClasses. Dead before it even started. I knew these inside out and yet no one used them.
LINQ to SQL. Killed by MS just as I was starting to know it well. http://ayende.com/Blog/archive/2008/...nq-to-sql.aspx

Any others here a specialist in learning dead-end technology?

    R/3 and APO

    Never went anywhere

    I wouldn't bother.

IBM Assembler - its just so old fashioned these days, having to load accumulators etc its so bothersome.

Oh and VSAM Macros - that was a waste of time .

My advice - just stick with what you know - thats more than enough,

MS are getting good at doing this. They bought up ProClarity a couple of years back, only to run it into the ground.
Speaking gibberish on internet talkboards since last Michaelmas. Plus here on Twitter

They have a bad history with database support, I remember an article which made a point. I don't know why, since I think they're pretty good in other areas.

I hadn't heard about LINQ being killed, but this is only the SQL part? It's not being removed though, just further development is halted?

Oh, no, a serious techy thread in general.

DrawPerfect - Some years ago I spent a whole Christmas holiday learning every scrap of it and practising, and used it to produce various maps and diagrams for one of pater's archaeological projects, only to find it was discontinued a couple of years later (rolled into some Corel presentation product).

SNMP - Spent ages learning this and the myriad intricacies of ASN.1, MIBS, OIDs, etc, for my current contract at the time and in the hope and expectation this skill would get me into comms contracts. But nothing ever came of it because I lacked other networking skills.

That's the problem with a lot of these things. One skill on its own is like a car with one wheel - To get anywhere, you need a whole cluster of related skills.

              .
They are going to ignore LINQToSQL from now on and focus instead on ADO.NET LINQ to Entities.

Rumor is MS found out LinqtoSQL not only worked but was simple to use so it has to be done away with

I remember that. Seemed kind of weird.
