    Physics 2.0

I was in Comet yesterday buying a portable stereo, and mentioned to the young spotty oik try to sell me one that 'ghetto blasters' are much smaller these days. I really wanted something about 3 foot wide with humungus speakers that played tapes, radio, cd and had IP dock.

He said that the modern cd players has smaller speakers as speaker technology had moved on, and the smaller modern speakers produced the same output as the older larger ones.

    Comet has redefined the Watt.

I can't wait for physics 3.0. We'll all be able to walk on the ceiling or something.
Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

I'm really impressed with my landlady's Bose speakers for iPod. I was looking around the room for the source of the music and couldn't believe the quality that was filling a large room when she pointed to it...

He is actually correct, the watt value that you are referring to will be the input power and the efficiency of the unit will determine the output power as measured by the ear.

There is no doubt that the efficiency of speakers has improved over the last 10-20 years.

Isn`t the enclosure just as important as the speaker?

But will it make the windows rattle in their frames? No.

And will it make the neighbours' floorboards go thumpa-thumpa-thumpa under their feet? No.

And will it make you feel like the dog's bollocks upstairs on the bus when the chav kids can't hear their beatz 'cos of your 120W of AC~DC blasting down their earholes? No.

But will it's cheap white plastic go yellow and start cracking up within two years? Well, yes, actually.

You need a volume control that goes up to 11

I don't actually - all I want is music that doesn't degrade at a reasonably high volume level.

Bose would do the job for me...

Thinking about it - what on earth were you looking in Curry's for if you wanted that kind of speaker???

I thought you'd be perusing specialist shops where the assistants know their stuff and you have to yell at them to catch their attention...

Edit - just realised that SY01 was quite ok with Currys - it's RC who has to yell at the assistants...

120W? At university, the guy in the room next to me had two 500W speakers (And amp to match).

Being woken up at 3am to hear "Oi - get your filthy hands of my desert" as clearly as if it had been whispered in my ear was an experience. The few seconds after that, I thought the building had collapsed...

( Just played it now - even with the puny speakers connected to my PC, the floor shook ).
