Not all the public sector vote Labour. Many find Labour too right wing. Also a large number of them don't have a vote in the UK.How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

BTW Thatcher didn't win in spite of the Poll Tax - the tories dumped her before the following election, and that probably contributed to the tories getting back in. Regarding cruise missiles, I don't recall that having a great public impact on votes.
However, she did get back in in 1983 following the recession of the early eighties, so public servants must have helped elect her then. I'd guess that was partly down to the Falklands and partly down to the Winter of Discontent still being relatively fresh in the memory.Comment
