Hello all of you - I am new here!

    Hello everyone,

I co-own an IT company in Manchester which specialises in hire of IT and presentation equipment for corporate use and also software development with my sister (the latter is something we have just branched out into due to a couple of new software experts in our team). I would like to get to chat here with anyone else in the business and also to ask advice on a pressing issue.

It is my sister and I that do the book-keeping and payroll in and I have been struggling for a while with payroll software. Ridiculous as we are now specialists in software. I feel unqualified to use it in the sense that when something doesn't add up then I don't know where it has gone wrong. Holiday pay is one area where we have struggled to keep up and employees have complained about mistakes. Also I have overpaid several employees in the last year and then had to all them into the office to ask them for the money back and this has caused some bad feeling. All this is down to our payroll 'system'. I am not sure whether I should invest in new and much better software such as Sage or I should turn outsourced payroll services.

I have been looking at this company - Ceridian but am unsure whether our number of employees warrants outsourcing. We have thirty staff members who are all valuable and worry that we will lose them if we do not pay them properly all of the time.

Please, does anyone have any ideas and can you tell me about your experiences? Sorry if I have not put this pist in an appropriate place.

    Thank you

welcome. don't know what the costs are but clearly it will be very expensive to your company if you continue to fail the payroll. either get a grip on the software (at the expense of other stuff no doubt) or hire someone to get a grip of it for you. outsourcing might be the way to go but i think you need to understand where you are and where you'd like to go before selecting a solution that may not fit. try and apply the logic you apply to your customers requests for stuff to your own internal needs?

The bunch of disguised employees masquerading as business people that constitutes CUK is unlikely to have much experience with payroll software

My experience of SAGE (instant accounts and payroll, which I bought when I decided to do my own accounts a few years ago) is that you need to have a solid grasp of accounting and payroll to understand what the software does and even begin to set it up. I gave up on it as I found it far too complex for my one man company.

Certainly seems it would be better for all concerned if you were free to concentrate on running the business. Personally in your position I would outsource or hire someone.

Outsource to an account or payroll company. It used to be easy to calculate but not theses days. Spend your time on what you are best at eg: Marketing etc and leave what you are not good at to the professionals

You appear to be a freeloading sponger that does not "add value" to the overall process. Why not consider outsourcing your "input" to Terry Turban, and go back to where your real "talent" is embedded.................double glazing!

To be honest. I think you were spot on. Don't let that freeloading, trouble making bitch make you feel guilty!!!
