Without a parachute? Maybe there's an app for that...

        1) How did they build the tower in the first place?
        2) Why do the maintenance guys not wear a parachute?

At that height (540m), he's travelling 4 cm/s faster than ground level and if he fell would hit the ground 0.4 m from the point directly below the fall position, assuming he didn't flab about on the way down and there was no air.

The first IMAX I saw (or have they gone all Apple and renamed it iMax?) was the one with a chap in period attire flying a balloon. At the moment he crossed over a cliff edge the projection went from small to full size.

I distinctly remember grabbing hold of the seat armrests. Swiftly. Urgently. With much force. And the rest of the audience did too.

First bit with a crane, rest of it using heavy duty commercial helicopters ( eg : Russian ) in sections.

Having formerly rigged & climbed on some of the highest in the UK ( Bassetts Pole for example & UHF in Shetland Isles ), you do get used to the 'height'. Most of the similar towers in UK are a lot easier to move around on than this particular one with more consideration to maintenance & HSE requirements.
As for free climbing, no thanks. I'll take my time, attach and be safe in the knowledge that should I slip I'll be going home to the family & not in a tuperware box in liquid form.........

The video has been pulled from YouTube, but is available here: LiveLeak.com - Stairway to Heaven

Or by foogling: "stairway to heaven" +tower +climb

                Yikes.

There is just not enough money in the world for me to climb something like that. Respect to those guys.

Did you get involved with rigging stuff like that or did they keep you in the truck twiddling dials?
