Default 300mph Chinese train breaks record

A Chinese passenger train hit a record speed of 302 miles per hour on Friday during a test run of a recently completed high speed link between Beijing and Shanghai.

It was the fastest speed recorded by an unmodified conventional commercial train. Other types of trains in other countries have travelled faster.

State television footage showed the sleek white train whipping past green farm fields in eastern China. The 824-mile-long line is set to open next year, 12 months ahead of schedule. It will cut journey times between Beijing and Shanghai from the current 10 hours to under five hours. The line is expected to carry 80 million passengers a year.

The project costs £21 billion and is part of a government effort to link many of China's cities by high-speed rail and reduce overcrowding on heavily used lines. (AtW's comment: that's like 2% of bank bailout in UK)

Oh FFS, and in this country some Tory MPs have got audacity to protest against high speed rail that happens to go via their rich mates houses, ffs - in China they'd get shot for putting petty local interests ahead of the country!

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

They're not bad at dams either

When finished, the project is expected to have cost 180 billion yuan, 12% under budget, approximately 30 billion USD

Notice - 12% under budget. Why? Because suppliers know what would happen to them personally if they overrun budgets: that's ultimate personal responsibility in action where it matters.

"824-mile-long line is set to open next year"

824 fooking miles - and they are planning to build like 12k miles of high speed track in the next 5 years, and 120 mile track between London/Birmingham is still under discussion, ffs scheduled to go live in 2015, assuming some tory ******** who object to the line as it goes through their territory, ffs - in Spain when high speed rail was build MPs were lobbying hard to have a local station!!!

"1st world" was a term developed in the USA relatively recently. It is derived from not knowing the expression "3rd world" follows "Old World" and "New World". The Merkins have hung onto this "1st World" term as they like to think they have been around for a long time and are special, rather than only being around for a few centuries and still relatively "New".

AtW, if we had a high speed rail link from Birmingham, would you actually go anywhere, or just stay in your bedsit and moan about it?

It will cut journey times between Beijing and Shanghai from the current 10 hours to under five hours.

I can get from Newcastle to London in 3 1/2 hours, so they must have tulip trains.
I was miserable and depressed, but CUK turned it all around. Now I'm depressed and miserable.
