What is more breath taking is that people didn't think this happened?! What do you think GCHQ et al did all day? They have had the ability to wiretaps phone for decades now, don't you think at some point someone would have also said, can we do this for emails?

After the second World War Bletchley park was "closed" and kept secret for many, many years.

The main reason was because the British government had kindly given the large cache of Enigma machines that had suddenly come on to the market to our allies who continued to use them for a couple of decades.

Unlike Relakks, IPREDator does not log its users' traffic information.

However, the services are based on the same software, including the use of 128-bit encrypted point-to-point tunnelling protocol (PPTP).

PPTP is a user-friendly VPN protocol that was first implemented on Microsoft's operating systems in 1996. Reports by security experts such as Bruce Schneier have since revealed a number of flaws in the technology, including password hashing and encryption issues.

IPREDator co-founder Peter Sunde, who also founded popular file-sharing site The Pirate Bay, told iTnews: "128-bit encrypted PPTP can probably be broken by someone that can eavesdrop on the traffic."

"But in order to eavesdrop on the traffic, the government -- at least in Sweden -- must have a valid reason to do that."
        From here albeit in 2009

        Is their concern still valid?

I'd love to know what they do with three days worth of internet data. Presumably every lolcat and youporn video has to be analysed for secret messages.

I wish I had invented youporn, I'd be rich.
But each video is watched many times a day, so 3 days' worth of data will actually be reduced quite a lot. How many NEW web-pages get viewed every day that they mightn't already have classified?

You can guess what nationality the inventor is and have a look at what else he has running...

Well it was always my impression that our government focused on those individuals / groups, who were a threat to the sovereignty of the nation.

Instead what is happening with mass surveillance is citizens are effectively being subject to 'guilty until proven innocent' treatment. This is not that dissimilar to 1930's Germany.

To quote Ben Franklin from 1755.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Not only is it true, but is becoming the reality.

So we have all the trappings of a police state, had two recent PMs with a messiah complex and still we have some elements of a democracy

In that light it's quite remarkable

Personally it doesn't come as any kind of surprise - I'd have been surprised if the US/UK were NOT monitoring all comms.
I think you'll find that the BND have been in cahoots with the NSA for a little while now and like the UK, the politicians are only now finding out what has been going on behind your backs. In fact the Germans have known, albeit not all, about a lot of this stuff for a while. A few years ago the BND wanted the authority to tap into everyones electronic communications here but the government clamped down on it, so instead they use a backdoor with handshakes all around. What is needed now is the Chaos Computer Club to start ******* around (although I think all the good ones are probably retired now!)

About 1.5km from me is an old US airbase which is not fully abandoned by the Americans and is in fact a US staging post for ECHELON (the Dagger Complex) and local people have know about it for ages ECHELON-Station Griesheim bei Darmstadt. Looking at it on Google maps shows lots of little round buildings and we all know what they are.

It does make me feel uneasy.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

                      .
                      FTFY.

Well it seems that Germany protesteth too much since they use the data supplied by America.
In other words Germany is as much a police state as anyone else except they're not clever enough to collect the data themselves
                      Hard Brexit now!
