                Based on what MF said, plus the facts that he was at the top of a mainstream worldwide sport, he was uniquely skilled for a heavyweight boxer, his ability and character lifted his sport from the doldrums to it's golden period of the 1960s and 1970s, and polls and reputable publications like Sports Illustrated more often than not placed him as the greatest sportsman of the 20th century. Even the Australians voted him the greatest in their recent Sydney Herald poll, above Bradman.

                I'd say that's quite a bit. I remember a lot of his career, and off the top of my head the only ones in my lifetime who have come close are Tiger Woods and Pele (although personally I think Maradona was better than Pele ).
