Yes but 'undertaking' is less verbose than 'passing another vehicle when you are on an inside lane relative to it' and everyone knows what it means, even if technically it means nothing!

You can undertake on a motorway or dual carriageway.

The only time you can do this is when the lane(s) outside you are queuing and you aren't i.e. accidents

Two different things. Undertaking is where you change from an outside lane into an inside lane to pass a car, and they will nick you for it (seen it happen on a very rainy dark motorway when you couldn't tell that the car behind was a copper).

I dont have an issue with undertaking being dangerous and/or illegal but I was overtaking on the slip road so this must be ok?

That's why it's an AUTHORITAH! thing. Otherwise they would have done something other than give me an earful.

Guess a lot of this is perception. To you it might have been a perfectly acceptable thing to do, no danger. To someone watching carefully from behind they might see a loon who was too impatient to wait and set off like a bat out of hell with the intention of speeding off on the dual carriageway.

If he jumps to the conclusion you are a loon and only acted legally cause he was there he might have a wag leaving you non the wiser to what you had done.

For example, the same situation can be seen two ways. It's important to be going slightly faster than traffic when joining a motorway and so have to accelerate briskly down them. It's a fine line between being an advanced motorist and 'making headway to join the traffic at the correct speed' or a speed freak with a bit of tarmac in front of him. Following someone for 100 yards isn't enough to find out which you are.

They *might* nick you for it. It's not illegal (as there is no such thing as 'undertaking'), so whether that particular instance of it is dangerous or not is subjective.

I reckon it's probably an etiquette thing. I.e. save the 'slow' lane for lorries chugging up the slip road, but don't overtake cars that are going a bit slower (because that's typically because they are nervous drivers and blocking their path as you overtake makes the task even harder for them). I don't have too much sympathy for that stance though - if you're that nervous you shouldn't be allowed on the road until you've had enough training.
