RESTful Web Services

RESTful Web Services

I had an interview recently where the topic of RESTful web services came up. It's one of those buzzwords that gets bandied about a lot, but that everyone seems to use differently. When I pointed that out to the interviewer, he nodded in agreement.

I know, for example, that REST (Representational State Transfer) is a set of architectural guidelines defined by Roy Fielding in his PhD thesis written back 2000. But beyond that it's a term that's pretty muddled.

Have any of you encountered this architecture in a real-world project? What do you consider the key aspects of a RESTful design? WCF Data Services is probably the best known and most widely used implementation in .Net, but have you encountered any others? RESTful Objects for .Net? Some technology I haven't even heard of?
