So a demand for £14k to be paid for by 21st February. So help please.... Bedouin touted the scheme as HMRC compliant. I even confirmed this with them and checked again several times. Obviously this is my Tax bill but as Bedouin don't allow expenses a lot of this would have been expenses (8k a year for Rail ticket, food as each day was 12+ hours, 1 week every 5 was working from home covering nights ) can anyone advise me what I should do. I am already going to contact HMRC and request an extension and copies of any previous correspondence. Is it worth me contacting Bedouin? as they must shoulder some of this blame.
What kind of demand did you get? is it an APN or Discovery Assessment?

If it's a Discovery Assessment you can usually appeal and ask for the amount to be put on hold.

If it's an APN you need to deal with it before the deadline otherwise they will add penalties to the APN amount.

Either way you need to get impartial advice. I'm a member of Big Group and IMHO represents the best of the available options for advice and services to deal with this.

If Bedouin are like any of the other scheme providers you'll get limited help from them, usually you'll just get fobbed off.

Do not for a minute trust Bedouin/Redstone's advice on this. Get independent advice.

You've already been given advice to get independent advice and the Big Group is a very good start as is the information on this forum.

It sounds like this is an assessment and not an APN demand for payment in 90 days so the first thing to do is appeal. This can be done by simply writing a letter in reply stating that you are appealing their assessment and that no additional wax is due for the year in question and that you did not receive any other form of income liable to tax that you have not accounted for on your assessment.

An example, others might be on this forum.

        Dear xxx,

I acknowledge receipt of your letter dated dd mmm yay, a notice of assessment and tax calculation for yyyy/yyyy.

Please take this letter as my formal notice of appeal against the assessment on the ground that I do not agree with it as per a previous correspondence.

I apply to postpone the further tax charged of £xxxx on the ground that no additional taxable income has been agreed.

        Kindly acknowledge receipt.
        Yours faithfully,

          That's a discovery assessment.

Appeal and ask for a postponement.

That is simple but the next steps are not.

Hi could someone please help me.

Tax year 2014/2015 I worked through Bedouin for 5 weeks. Now I know lads getting £20,000 fines and I really don't need this so I understand it's the problem with not paying tax on the loans am I correct?

So what if I was to put in a self assessment for 2014/2015 and actually declare everything including the loans and pay my tax. Yes I know I've missed the deadline but the fine for that will be much smaller than waiting for hmrc to contact me in a year,2 years, 3 years time.

            Will this work?

Actual fines or demands for the tax "owed"?

Actual fines I presume it's tax owed plus fines for not paying over 2 years. Will what I have posted work ?

HMRC don't use the word "fine".

Are you sure it's not tax plus interest (for late payment)?

Sorry that's what I mean. Would putting in a self assessment for 2014/2015 work as I stated

I don't know. Some of these schemes have the added complication of IHT, so even paying the tax doesn't completely finalise things.

Given that you were only in the scheme for 5 weeks, the tax can't be very much. Even a few years interest on that would be pretty small; the HMRC interest rate is currently 3% per year. The lads you mention must have a hefty tax exposure to have clocked up £20,000 in interest.

You might be better off getting in touch with HMRC and saying you want to "settle" this, rather than just filing a self-assessment. (Settle/settlement is the term HMRC use for finalising matters.)
