  • Was there ever any other reason? When employers bleat on about "not enough skilled workers available" the unsaid part is always "..at the price we are willing to pay."....

replied to Bendy screens finally useful?
Maybe half current thickness (= current thickness when folded) is a little unrealistic in the short term, but I'd take something a bit thicker with a fully closing hinge. One big benefit would be no need to for a case, as the screen would be protected when folded. My case is at least half as thick as...

I quite like that, also solves the problem of bend radius in the screen in an unobtrusive way.

I don't agree that foldable is going to be a joke long term. Current tech, maybe, but I can see the merits of it. Personally I'd like a phone with the same size (unfolded) as now, but in a smaller...

I've got my cameras running. No nesting yet, but lots of inspections. Probably a bit early yet for them to really get going, but it won't be long....

That was my point really. One headline rate of taxation doesn't really give you the whole picture. Other countries have even lower div rates, or retain some sort of imputation - although not many, it seems. Funny how they used to think that corp tax + personal tax was double taxation, but have quietly...

It's very easy to compare headline rates but much tougher to get a good handle on what they actually mean for the bottom line. e.g. what deductions are allowed at what rates, do you get franking credits/double taxation mitigation when taking dividends etc. If anyone knows of a good resource to compare...

I wouldn't count on it - there hasn't been much sign of any kind of censure of Priti from the government. She should never have been in the position in the first place, after her last sacking as foreign secretary, but they have a only a small pool of Boris/Brexit loyalists to choose from, so she'll...

The other angle is that if this had gone to court, he would have got more - at least in the view of the legal team representing the Home Office. Hence the payout. There's a scandal here, but I don't think it is corruption - rather, it is the behaviour of the (almost) universally reviled Patel....

  • It's just a new compressed image format, somewhat smaller than either png or jpg, and supports transparency, unlike jpg. Not sure why changing the extension to png should work, I imagine whatever you ultimately open it in is still treating it as webp so maybe your are missing a file association?

replied to Coproration Tax To Rise to 25%
Must admit when I first heard it I thought it would revert to the old small profits threshold of £300k. I will be very interested to see the tapering schedule up to £250k. Assuming it is progressive, and not a step change at the threshold, then I guess most of us will be somewhere in the 22% range...

Yeah, small profits was £300k, enough even for some of the people on here

They'll try and sell this tax uplift on the basis that it is only going back to what it was a few years ago, but the reality for most companies (and I'd be fairly sure that most companies report < £300k profit),...

It's a "bad" tax, in that it discourages moving, when moving could be advantageous for both the mover and the economy. With house prices so high, stamp duty is serious slug of cash on a family home, especially in the south east. Switching to a better job for an extra 10k is much harder to...

  • I agree, she was treated terribly. So she has some genetic difference that affects her hormone levels, and maybe gives her some kind of competitive advantage, for which she was villified. Meanwhile, we celebrate other athletes who also have genetic advantages - whether it is Michael Phelps and his size...

replied to 5 Pandemic Mistakes We Keep Repeating
I don't disagree, and I suppose "not risky" is not the best way of phrasing it - everything carries some risk, it is just a matter of degree. From reading a few of the SAGE types on Twitter and elsewhere, there does seem to be something of a concensus that outdoor interactions are an order...

replied to 5 Pandemic Mistakes We Keep Repeating
That was kind of my point. The rules as they stand do not seem to align perfectly with what we are told is risky - especially with respect to outdoor stuff, which the scientists are now telling us is very low risk indeed (as in, no confirmed transmission in outdoor settings). So people are making their...

I think most people have a pretty good sense now of what is risky and what isn't. Outdoor stuff, according to the scientists, is not risky. We've followed the rules pretty well until now, but I'd be lying if I said we hadn't had a few dog walks etc over the past month where we just happened to coincide...
