Anyone on here drive a car with continuously variable transmission (CVT)?

Looking at buying a Subaru Legacy which has CVT. Though I'm used to automatics, I've never driven a car with CVT. Just wondering if any of you have experience of this?

    Cheers

used to have a Volvo 66 (Rubber band driven) Apart from replacing the belt at 100,000 miles it was fine (apart from the Renault engine )

A lot smoother than other automatics at the time.

I had a Ford CVT. The bands snapped and destroyed the gearbox case when they went. Stranded and car needed new gearbox.

              Avoid.

Indeed. My next car will have one.

Had an A6 Avant with CVT and I loved it. Didn't really worry too much before I got it, figured it was just another automatic. It is a lot smoother even than a DSG, though I don't think quite as fuel efficient (but very close).

Takes a bit of getting used to, as when you accelerate the engine RPM jumps to a fixed level (depending on how hard you stick your foot down) and then the CVT transmission handles the acceleration, so you don't get the usual engine note building as you increase speed.

                  I'd have another one.
