    Default SQL Certification

Young chap at work asked me about SQL Certification and if it's worth getting (I think it's appraisals season and he's thinking about training for next year ) but I couldn't really help him. I've done a bit of SQL programming in my time, SSIS, RS etc but never got only certs so couldn't say if they are worth the money or not. A few developers I know don't have the certs either as far as I know.

What are thoughts? Sounds like he may have to pay 50/50 so don't want to say it's worth it when it's not.

Is the company likely to pay him more for gaining them?

Would it help change roles at the company as a career progression or to become a specialist where suitable experience could be gained to back up the qualification?

Is it something asked for by other companies in their job descriptions for roles the permie is interested in for the future?

Those would be my starting points if company is not going to 100% pay for them or require some form of clawback of fees if permie leaves within a specific timeframe.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Ex ClientCo used such certifications for their permies to determine the 'grade' - in order to progress from 'Junior thing' to 'thing' you had to have the certs (and other stuff like n years). But it really does depend on the company, and they provided the training for their staff to get the certs.

If he wants to progress get the certs - I have found that often companies will not promote from within because that would mean the experience they already have just costs more.

However if he has the certs then he can at least start to look elsewhere to give the bean counters something to think about.

This co is as others have said, it helps to go from "Assistant Systems Analyst" to "Systems Analyst" job title, and they are the kind of company that pays based on job title and not necessarily experience. My instinct would be, go and get some qualifications, but when I looked at the various ones open to him there are loads ... who knew there were so many?!?

He currently does a mix of stuff including standard SQL querying, SSRS report, ETL/SSIS. So would you recommend a specific route to follow e.g 70-761 (querying SQL) first, then maybe 70762 or even move on to the BI exams as he does build SSRS reports today, and I will want him to know about olap cube development.

    Cheers.
