Have had to recover daughters laptop, which was not backed up. Can anyone recommend products that might be able to recover jpeg images before I proceed with reloaded other software?

Don't turn the machine on. Take out the hard drive. Put the hard drive in another machine and use something like:
http://www.active-undelete.com/
or
http://www.restorer2000.com/
Both of these have worked well for me in the past -
I had a major problem a while back with a storage device. I was migrating a number of machines and handed back my work machine. On the final run through, I unplugged the device, wiped the two machines and handed them back to my company. My third machine had a faulty hard drive and it packed up just as the last backup was completed.
I then went a bought a new Laptop, plugged in the device and discovered it had corrupted. I was distraught as it had everything on it.
I tried a number of methods, but the best I found was RStudio(which I had to pay for), but was able to completely return everything (just remember to save it's file directory after it scans)What happens in General, stays in General. You know what they say about assumptions!Comment

You can get them from Maplin Electronics and suchlike places, or from online sources like Overclockers if you can wait for the post; as it's a laptop drive, be sure to get the 2.5 inch variety, as it'll rattle around something rotten in a 3.5 inch one (as well as not connecting).
If the drive is still good (i.e. it was a software rather than a hardware issue) then you end up with an external hard drive as a bonus backup deviceComment
