British women are using mobile phones to give male admirers the cold shoulder by being glued to their handsets when really they’re not speaking to anyone at all. Research due out this week will lift the lid on how mobile devices are arming females with an effective prop to cool the burning gaze of male passers by, through pretend speaking or texting. Such is the headline finding from Mobile Life, a study of mobile phone use in Britain’s 21st century, commissioned by Carphone Warehouse and obtained by The Guardian. It found that 54 per cent of women under 25 admitted using their mobile phones in public situations to deter womanisers from approaching. One woman quoted in the study said: “It’s better than a newspaper, because there are real people in there you could call or text if you wanted. It’s reassuring.” Similar research, also from the Social Issues Research Centre, found that men gossip as much as women on their mobile but tend to talk more about themselves, with less desire for feedback. In the study, men spoke about ‘important’ subjects such as politics from anything up to five per cent of the call, though a female presence escalates the talking time to up to 20 per cent.
