City professionals will be making mobile VoIP calls by the year-end thanks to a plan to give the Square Mile almost total WiFi coverage from December. The anticipated move follows a deal struck by The City of London Corporation to incorporate the wireless network into street furniture such as signs and lampposts in London’s financial district. Unlike traditional wireless links that run off standalone hotspots, the City’s new platform will be a mesh network that enables continuous activity. Using multi-radio technology rather than the single-radio equipment ensures anyone inside the hotzone will be able to access the Internet by simply turning on their device and logging on. Corporation planning and projects manager Simon McGinn reportedly said an accompanying WiFi service will also be provided to attract and retain the capital’s businesses. The instant appeal of the Corporation’s agreement with The Cloud is however the flexibility in communications that near total WiFi coverage can bring. “For a trader, time is money and every second counts; walking from one building to another without dropping a VoIP call can add enormous value to a business,’ Mr McGinn said, speaking to Computing. His comments come as the network provider yesterday celebrated an “industry milestone” as the first Vonage VoIP call was made across The Cloud’s WiFi network. The network is immediately available at 7,000 locations across the UK, accessible to Vonage customers via their WiFi phones as soon as they are within range of one of the WiFi hotspots. There is no password or user logon process; users pick up the WiFi signal strength and can make and receive calls immediately. Pricing is included in the standard £7.99 a month “Residential Unlimited” package from Vonage, which includes unlimited calls to UK and Irish landlines as well as free calls to other Vonage callers wherever they are in the world. “Mobile VoIP is now a reality through this innovative service,” said Bobby Sarin, COO of The Cloud. “With the recent go-live of our first city centre hotzone in Manchester and the forthcoming hotzones across the UK, this partnership makes low-cost VoIP telephony available to a much wider audience.” Aug 10, 2006 Email this article Printer friendly page Previous Page
