Internet callers in London are said to be feeling less than festive after industry leader Skype admitted a reported 10,000 UK numbers will be cut off before Christmas. E-mails from the Ebay-owned company apparently inform customers in the capital that their just-given 020 7870 numbers will be disconnected by December 20. The problem being that Skype, the largest supplier of net calls in the UK, handed out the numbers without realising they had been pre-assigned to another company. Disclosures seen by a Sunday paper add that GCI Telecom - which leased the numbers - agreed that Gamma Telecom could have them for their own customers. Orders for business cards and mailshots displaying numbers have been binned by furious Skype customers, who are promised a year’s free subscription in recompense. Reflecting on the chaos, Skype, which leases all of its numbers, said the error was unprecedented in its history. “It’s deeply regrettable and it’s never happened before,” a spokesperson told The Sunday Telegraph. “We will do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again.” The reassurance may hold little comfort for users of the numbers, particularly if they were affected by Skype’s two-day outage of its calling service just months ago .
