Staff at O2 abused their entitlement to discount on Apple’s iPhone by buying the handset at the reduced rate to later sell it on at a price over the internet. About half a dozen employees at the mobile retailer’s London branches have reportedly been let go for the scam, which was exposed yesterday by a Sunday newspaper. Typically, staff obtained the iPhone with O2’s discount of up to 20 per cent, before selling the handset on eBay, where the cost of items can exceed the retail price. Although the tactic of mobile telecoms staff attempting to cash in on their work-related discounts is not new, the reaction from 02 suggests the industry may adopt a fresh stance. “O2 is cracking down on the practice in a sign that mobile firms are no longer prepared to turn a blind eye,” an O2 insider told the Mail on Sunday. “The iPhone is an iconic product for 02 and it makes sense to start there, but I predict that we will see this spread across the sector. The days when this kind of scam could be ignored are over.” In addition to the employees who have now lost their jobs, around 20 workers on O2’s payroll are said to be under investigation for abusing their discount entitlements.
