State to deploy online crime unit

A new police unit has been set up to tackle the “global menace” of internet crime that hits four million Britons a year at an estimated cost of £50millon.

Home Office minister Vernon Coaker also said the Police Central e-crime Unit, which will get just £7.4m in funds, will help tackle credit card and “specialised” frauds online.

The unit is based on the idea that most e-crimes are fraud-related, and so it will work on cases reported to two fraud agencies, also yet to emerge, and operate nationwide.

Although it will be dedicated to policing e-crime, PCeU is seen as more of a precursor to the single point of reportage for all online attacks, which businesses want.

Hinting as much, the Association of Chief Police Officers said that thanks to the unit, the police “can now work towards creating a national coordination to combat e-crime” in Britain.

Businesses have said this work would not need doing if the National High Tech Crime Unit had not been swallowed by SOCA, which does not take reports of cyber crime directly.

More in line with calls from industry, PCeU will help the police “get to grips with modern forms of hi-tech internet crime” by providing specialist training to officers across the regions.

The move should please the Corporate IT Forum, a representative of IT users in FTSE 100 companies, which has said police struggle to cope with e-crime due to its complexity.

Based in the Metropolitan Police Service, the PCeU will receive £3.9m from the Met and £3.5m from the government over three years, while also seeking support from private sector companies. It is due to be operational by the spring of next year.
