For having a CV dotted with technology giants, Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, must have always wanted IT workers to benefit from the professional network that he set up in 2002. The ex-employee of Fujitsu and Apple Computer should be preparing a toast, then, because IT types are second only to creatives in terms of reporting the perks of having an online professional profile. Forty-six per cent of IT workers said building an online identity for their career was important for advancement, in a nod to celebrities who have created their own personal ‘brands’ for the entertainment world. When asked if their online profile had specifically been useful when looking for a new job, 50 per cent of IT professionals said it had, compared with only 35 per cent of professionals in financial services. Senior figures in organisations emerged as being ahead of the curve when it came to cyber careers, whereas younger members of staff appeared less active in building a professional life online. This suggests young professionals have been slow to transfer their social networking skills to their professional lives, said LinkedIn, which produced the findings from a survey it commissioned of 2,000 UK adults. Of those professionals with an online professional profile, nearly a quarter said it had directly lead to new business contacts, while 17 per cent claimed it generated new business or sales leads. Cristina Hoole, a director at LinkedIn, said: “We advise all professionals to embrace online networking so they can easily tap into a global network where they can share opportunities, exchange knowledge and advice and gain insights about employment”.
