Treasury hires IT-business veteran

The government is turning to an IT-business veteran from the commercial sector in an attempt to get more for its money on technology projects.

Martin Read, the former chief executive of Logica has parachuted into Her Majesty’s Treasury where he will scrutinise the £13bn spent on IT in the public sector each year.

His appointment, 13 months after he left the company following a boardroom bust-up, is seen as a wider strategy to get private sector thoughts on public sector IT problems.

According to the Financial Times, which broke news of his appointment, it will be complemented with the arrival of three other businessmen into public sector positions.

Like Mr Read, they will look at the potential for efficiency gains when it comes to how taxpayers’ money is being spent, though only his remit will focus on technology.

Treasury officials told Kable that Mr Read will standardise and simplify business process and improve procurement so the government, and its contractors, get better at delivery.

His findings, alongside those of the trio of businessmen, will feed into a government-wide efficiency review, which is expected to report in time for next year’s Budget.

Read spent 14 years at Logica before being managing director of GEC Marconi Radar and Control Systems. He has been a non-executive director at Boots, ASDA and British Airways.
