SEMH Teaching Assistant - Bury

A well‑established and supportive school in Bury is looking to appoint an SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full‑time basis. The school supports pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, many of whom require consistent support to re‑engage with education and develop positive routines.

This role is ideal for someone who is confident, resilient and committed to making a difference in the lives of young people.

You will work closely with pupils who may present with behavioural and emotional challenges, supporting them both within lessons and through targeted interventions. The role requires a calm and consistent approach, with a strong focus on building trust and promoting positive behaviour.

Support may be delivered on a 1:1 basis or within small groups, depending on pupil needs.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide tailored support for pupils with SEMH needs
- Support behaviour management using consistent strategies
- Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils
- Help pupils regulate emotions and develop coping mechanisms
- Support engagement in lessons and structured activities
- Promote positive behaviour, routines and expectations
- Work alongside teaching staff and pastoral teams
- Contribute to a safe, structured and supportive environment

- SEMH or behaviour support settings
- Alternative provisions or PRUs
- Youth Work or mentoring roles
- Support Work, care or community‑based experience
- Education or school‑based roles

The ideal candidate will:

- Be calm, patient and emotionally aware
- Have confidence managing challenging behaviour
- Be consistent and reliable in their approach
- Build positive relationships with young people quickly
- Be motivated to support pupil progress and wellbeing

Requirements

- Full‑time availability, Monday to Friday
- Experience supporting young people in any capacity
- A proactive and dependable attitude
- Willingness to complete safeguarding and vetting checks
