Are you a resilient and compassionate Behaviour Mentor with experience supporting primary-aged children with SEN?
We are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join a specialist SEN primary school in Reading. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to regulate their emotions, build positive relationships, and engage with learning.
You will work within a supportive and specialist environment, supporting children aged 4-11 who may display challenging behaviour, anxiety, or difficulty with emotional regulation. This role is ideal for someone who understands that behaviour is a form of communication and is committed to a therapeutic, child-centred approach.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs.
Implement individual behaviour plans and use de-escalation strategies to support pupils in managing their emotions.
Work closely with class teachers, the SENCO, and pastoral staff to adapt learning and promote positive engagement.
Build trusting, consistent relationships with pupils, acting as a positive role model.
Support pupils during transitions, unstructured times, and daily routines.
Monitor and record pupil progress, feeding back to the wider team and contributing to EHCP reviews where appropriate.
Promote emotional regulation, resilience, and social inclusion across the school.Person Specification:
Essential:
Proven, hands-on experience supporting primary-aged children with SEN, SEMH, or challenging behaviour.
Experience working within a specialist SEN setting or mainstream primary school with a strong SEN provision.
A calm, patient, and resilient approach, with the ability to build trust with young children.
Strong understanding of SEMH, trauma-informed practice, and behaviour as a form of communication.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).Desirable:
Team Teach, MAPA, or similar de-escalation training.
Experience working within an SEN provision, resourced unit, or specialist school.
Additional qualifications in supporting SEND, mental health, or child development.About the School:
