    Unintended consequence of maternity leave

40% of managers avoid hiring younger women to get around maternity leave | Money | The Guardian

"In any event, the introduction of shared parental leave from April will mean men as well as women taking leave to look after their new baby. This will help to stamp out outdated stereotypes about who should do what, and let parents get on with making their own decisions about how they manage work and family life."

That will help a bit. But with women still seen as the primary carer they are always going to suffer in their career.

Employment relations minister Jo Swinson said: "Pregnancy discrimination is illegal, immoral and completely unacceptable. There is no excuse for such attitudes from these employers, who frankly are dinosaurs. British business simply can't afford to lose out on half of the available talent pool.
Completely missing the point; British business simply can't afford to pay half of the talent pool to not work as well as paying replacements to do the job.

As for employers being dinosaurs; they're the dinosaurs that pay the bills.

How has the UK ended up with such cretins in government?

I've noticed between the UK and Germany a greater proportion of fathers seem to take paternity care. I've no idea why what the driving factors are.

Ha! Talent pool! British business can't afford to pay competitive salaries full-stop. It's one of the reasons the country has such a dire lack of scientists and engineers.

The lack of investment by business is only further planting the seeds for future underperformance.

I think paternity leave is basically treated as equal to maternity leave in Germany.

One chap I knew here in Munich was on 6-months salary @ 20 hour weeks.

He was. They'd never take me alive.

The last time I did it, the amount of grief I got for taking three days off you'd think WWIII had started
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

Since women are generally popping sprogs at a greater age, how will this work? Only employ post-menopause women?

I got 8 days paternity leave in 1991.
