“ ‘Brexit is a business bankrupter': small firms brace for no deal

Bosses face tough decisions and politicians are refusing to listen, says a Bristol business owner

Small and medium-sized businesses, the lifeblood of communities, have told of difficult decisions to quit Britain or cancel investment plans because of Brexit.

The owner of a Bristol online retailer that employs 85 people has said that unless there is a Christmas Brexit miracle he will move part of his business to Germany in January because of impending tariffs on exports to the EU.

“We’ve held off and we’ve held off from the point of letting people go, but in January, unless anything happens, we are going to be making people redundant,” said Shaun Loughlin, 34, a founder of the Bristol action sports clothing business Freestyle Extreme.

In anticipation of no deal, he has opened an office in Bucharest with seven staff and he is poised to sign the final paperwork on a new warehouse in Nuremberg to allow him to continue importing and exporting to the continent tariff-free.“

Who cares, it’s only 85 people?

If most of these small businesses were tech startups it would be a problem but they aren't. Most are small shops, fast food takeaways, restaurants, leafletters etc. which only survive because of cheap labour. The UK is a low productivity nation compared to Germany in large part because immigration props up such marginal businesses which otherwise would make no economic sense. Low skilled immigration is taking our economy in the wrong direction.

After Brexit it’s going to be great - enough businesses who employ low cost workers will go bust, this will work wonders in the jobs market which will have to accomodate lots of desperate people - most of whom will be British by the way.

This should really improve productivity, much better than Germany’s - because lots of people will be desperate to do unpaid overtime in order to keep their jobs, so on paper output per pound will grow sky high, hurray for Brexit!

Maybe it's because their business model involves trying to sell people shorts for £90?

Maybe you should have read the article than posting gibberish:

The owner of a Bristol online retailer that employs 85 people has said that unless there is a Christmas Brexit miracle he will move part of his business to Germany in January because of impending tariffs on exports to the EU.
Seeing as its the season of goodwill, maybe you could go and visit each one of the 85 people who are probably going to be made redundant and explain to them why leaving the EU is better for them? Perhaps you could take another Leaver and stand on the doorstep, 'Brexit Witnesses'

                  As the thread title states:

He was invited to Westminster to give a talk in Portcullis House about the challenges Brexit was posing to businesses in the west country. “Not a single Tory MP showed up,” he said. Jacob Rees-Mogg, a prominent Brexiter, is the MP for North East Somerset, a neighbouring constituency.
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

And how much of his business is exporting to the EU?

Are other companies selling the same goods for cheaper? ( a quick google shows an unequivocally yes) so is his customer base really going to shrink that much.

How much will the tariff add onto the board shorts he sells?

What guarantee was he given that staying in the EU would have meant he would have been able to stay competitive?
