Its just about jobs and how people go about the process of getting one. Please can you let me know how you search for a new job or how you found your current job?
Step 1. Update the CV, maybe knock an old job off the end to make way for info about the most recent one, try and squeeze in a reference to any trendy technology.
Step 2. See above. Jobserve, Monster, TheITJobBoard. Submit CV to 2 or 3 job ads a day.
Step 3. Phone later the same day. They usually have the CV to hand or on their database, but they've rarely actually looked at it. They usually agree the CV looks good, then...
Step 4. Discuss rate. In most cases this is where the process ends and it's the main time consuming bit about finding a new contract - no shortage of jobs, but only a few at a decent rate.
Step 5. If the rate's acceptable then the agent submits your cv to the client. This bit's frustratingly out of your hands and is the second big sticking point in the process.
Step 6. If the client picks you (i.e. there weren't any other CVs submitted at all) then do interview.
I've been offered the role after every contract interview I've done so far, but christ it takes me a while to get that far.
Most of us on here are freelance, consultants or contractors. We do not look for "jobs". Jobs are what employees have. Most of us have permanent jobs as employees of our own limited companies.
What we look for are contracts, units of work our businesses can fulfil by providing the services suplied by our companies. We work on a business to business basis.
I have posted the details of my staff on a number of websites which I have found to post the kind of work my company is looking for.
I get lots of responses from lots of agents, most of which I ignore as they are not suitable. When a suitable one comes through I speak to the agent to agree terms and we go from there.
Most of this is a waste of time, but does occasionaly provide contracts.
My current contract was negotiated in a slightly different way.
The agent I use knows me and my business. He specialises in my arena. He actively scouts for work in that arena and cultivates clients. If any of the clients have suitable work my agent rings me to ask if I fancy it.
I know that when he rings the work is suitable. He always tells me the rate and his cut. He usualy takes a bigger margin to recover start up costs but then reduces it so I make more should I stay on.
