A friend just installed BT broadband, they promised 8Mb connection but it stays at 2Mb. Called them up to find out what the problem was and told 'too far from the exchange'. She lives next door to the exchange FFS. How close do you have to be?
I don't think they do know your usage because I go over the limit all the time.
I used to use their modem and get warnings.
Now I use my own - no warnings.
Yes, you're right. They obviously have no way of telling how much bandwidth you use. It would be pointless them trying to measure it as it is all stored in your modem and never goes across their network.
You could have a great career as a polititian. They welcome people as knowledgeable as you.

It’s possible to monitor usage. Each account will be given an internal DNS entry on there side of the network. (not the one you use for your home router) E.g. Username.[DHCP-IP].BT-ADSL.WHATEVER. No matter what IP you use your account can me monitored by the provider. If they wish they can pick an account and monitor what you are watching or downloading. I have seen software monitoring up to 100,000 accounts and I would imagine that BT is running similar software.

If you go over your limit a couple of times they put you on a 'bad boy' pipe and they will 'traffic shape' you at peak times.
Why would anyone who works with computers use BT anyway? The big well known ISP's all have tulip customer service from my experience, go with a small specialist ISP, you get lower contention and a much better service all round.
HTH.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
