Not a veggie but was going to post about the fact that:

I remember a Sci Fi story where this was taken to its logical conclusion and no one was allowed pets, the story ended with the last pet keeper being tracked down so the world could be populated with yet one more human...Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.
