    Friend staying at my appartment....

...only during the week, only as he has a contract in the area. I believe he can claim the cost of his expenses, but what do I need to supply him with? Printed reciept ok, it's going to be < £50 per week so do I need to declare this on my tax return?

        Right.

My advice is give him receipts on the basis of a private B&B arangement and pocket the cash. The IR will takes years, if at all, to twig it. Just make sure payment is in cash.

Two things that may be of relevance:-

          1) The rent a room scheme. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/t...m-scheme.shtml

          2) Your "friend" maight like to read this. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM30073.htm

I am sure you can find some mutually satisfactory parameters for both sides
