Well without being able to sit and poke at it myself I'm making a blind guess that it's a local network timeout in the connection caused by the file size. Does it work ok for smaller files? If so can you reduce the file size? Does it happen only with images? Have you tried disableing the built in firewall etc that vista comes with? Have you sacrified a black cockrel on the full moon at midnight and offered the entrails to the great god Gates in an attempt to appease the spirits?*

*Well it's as likely to work as anything else where Vista is concerned,

Try the command-line FTP client. It's really easy and it always works, unlike rubbish GUI FTP clients.

I have vista on my laptop and sometimes it takes forever to copy files accross the network (Hard drive starts thrashing and it just seems to sit there trying to work out how long it's going to take to do the transfer without actually starting it). As far as i'm aware it's a known bug in Vista that MS haven't acknowleged yet.

Maybe this is happeneing to you and causing a time out with your FTP proggy?

Probably not the most helpful of posts, but it may give you a pointer in the right direction.

You and me both ardesco. Crashes a lot too. Sometimes tasks froze in previous versions, only in Vista does the whole damn machine lock up when there is nothing running except Explorer and all you did was rename a directory on a cd.

Ta for the sensible comments, try those. If all else fails dig out laptop with XP.

must admit i've had no porblems with crashes, but doing stuff over network is a pain in the ass. Luckily my lappy is used as a mobile dev platform for web stuff

Slow uploads and freezing in Vista

Had the same prob with slow uploads and freezing in Microsoft Windows Vista.
I had Macafee & Windows Defender running.
Got rid of Macafee, disabled most of defender and loaded Microsoft Windows Live OneCare (£35.00).

Hey Presto! No more Slow uploads and freezing in Vista.
