Does anyone here use it, do you have your own photos up there, and if so do you make any money from it ?

I used it - and very cheap & good it was, too. So, I assume that, yes, you'd make a few bob from it. But I think you'd need to take amazing photos and lots of 'em to retire from the commission!

I've bought loads of photos from them for websites, marketing brochures, etc. The quality is pretty good and prices are very good.

I can't imagine you'd make much money unless you are a good and prolific photographer. I'm sure others sites pay more in royalties.

I've also used http://www.shutterstock.com/ which is more expensive but better quality (IMHO).

Give it a try and see if it makes a good plan b.

well I've passed the signing up test, I've had my test images accepted as being good enough for stock photo's, and I've uploaded my first image.....just need it checking now.....let see what happens, it could be plan B.

If you look at the number of photos people have downloaded, they must make a fair amount of $$$

There's nothing rude on any of them, but I had a week on holiday then three weeks training out there, so have plenty of nice photos. I've listed them all on Flickr, but have just signed up to iStockphoto and Shutterstock, so will be moving them onto there instead.

One of my Hawaii photos was used in a Hawaiian weddings magazine once.

That wasn't what I was afraid of, you're a contractor the price won't be cheap. :D

we thats the thing, you can make upto $3 per picture down load, but also as low as $0.23 depending on the size of the image downloaded.

there are people on there who have 7k worth of down loads every month or so......

Guilty conscience, obviously!

The firewall here has obviously just been refreshed, so I've moved all my photos into a private set on Flickr before I decide which ones I want to put on the saleable websites...

If my internet connection works from my hotel tonight, that's me sorted.

I'm planning on putting mine there soon, plus elsewhere that I can put them. Might as well see what I can make from it.

How much did you get for your first download, then?

a whole $0.23 !!! but that not so much the point, the point is I only have 5 pictures there at the moment, and they were only there for a day or so. I was not expecting anything for several weeks. It would seem if you can get 2-3k pictures on there then you should have a fairly regular income from it. Proble is at the moment they have server capacity issues so new people like me can only upload 10 images a week, these images then get checked by upto 3 people for quality, I've had 3 rejected because they we slightly too bright.

Hey - it's a start!

The idea of having 2000 decent enough pictures to put on there, though, is a bit intimidating. I've got 1403 in a set on Flickr to go through, but there are lots of similar ones, and a few that I know will get rejected, plus the ones that aren't good enough. I might get it up to 200 if I'm lucky, so maybe this isn't going to make that much money for me!

I think this will be most of my weekend sorting out pics to upload, but they seem to be quite strict on what they need;

Images that iStock does need:
Corporate shots
Everyone looks a little more handsome when a suit's involved.

Groups & Teams
One person is great, two, three, four… just gets better and better.

Concept Stock
Leave it to others to shoot the obvious.

Sports
Cycling, ping pong, soccer, skateboarding, kung-fu, bocci ball, the list goes on.

Rare Artifacts
The more rare, the better.

Illustrations
Vector and not rasterized.

Holiday & Seasonal Themes
Christmas, Valentines, Easter: don’t wait until the last minute.

Fashion
Leave the jeans behind, unless they're couture...

Analogue and Grunge
Intriguing textures, effects, & treatments – not for the amateur of style.

Food and Beverages
Preferably with someone holding the edible item.

Images that iStock does not need:

Your dog or cat
He's adorable. Send a picture to your mom.

Flowers
iStock now possesses the definitive online collection of files called ‘flower’.

Flags
We can now proudly say we have every country covered.

Photos of your feet, socks, etc.
Try looking up with your camera instead.

Your immediate environment
Get up, move around a little. Keyboards, mice, cables, compact discs, floppy discs and monitors are covered.

Light Blurs
Great for fun and experimenting...

Brick walls
The Wall came down in 1989. Get over it.

Close-ups of fire
It's for your own safety.

Close-ups of eyes
They scare small children.

Symbols (!$%@)
You see it in every e-mail.

Sunsets & clouds
Very pretty, but...

Forest Snap Shots
We love nature, but...

Airplane Wings (& out the window shots)
In the end, they seem to all look the same.

Your Shadow
Try another route of dodging the model release.

Overly simple 3-D & Bryce renderings & Photoshop backgrounds
Challenge yourself a little.

Photoshop Backgrounds
Fun to experiment, but they're not quite stock.

Overly simple text
Let people pick out their own fonts.

I guess with some playing on photoshop I've got about 300 images I would have accepted, but I think you just need to get into the habit of shooting some images each week / month so you fill you upload limit.

I had thought about borrowing a meeting room at my gig to take some corporate shots....

Lucy

Hmmm, not too excited about corporate stuff, just what the world needs another turd in a suit.

Not sure if my Greenland stuff would be interesting to them now :frown

Sport - dull
Concept wtf
Food - perhaps

Just think of all the hours I've wasted here, when I could have been shooting and making dosh...

Why does an image of Nigella holding asparagus spring to mind?

Or eating a cherry.

Or a lollipop.

I'm sure there would be some call for them, the thing is are you going to be putting any more pictures up there ? If not then I'd say its not worth it.

It's highly tasteful, erotic imagery. Not porn at all, honest :wink
