Facebook (or what) for business use?

I have zero interest (up till now) in Facebook or anyhting similar, but I was reading the other day that people are using it (and similar "social" networking sites) for recruiting. Can this be true? Does anyone use these things other than for fun? (not that there's anything wrong with fun of course).

There's one called "Linked In" - I don't use it personally but know a few that do..

I use LinkedIn for Business - haven't had it up and running long enough to get any leads, however I now include a "link" to the Profile in e-mail - which I think is quite good.

The profile not only includes presvious assignment details, but also recommendations from those you've worked with / for.

Couls be useful in the future...

I use linked in and xing The former for maintaining contacts, the latter for those who I'd actually recommend.

I don't add agents to my network.

Cheers all - I do use linkedin already (but I didn't have it down as the same sort of thing as Facebook for some reason) - so far it hasn't helped generate any work, but I guess if I keep my profile updated it can't do any harm.

I could imagine Facebook acting more as an anti-employment tool to be honest. Don't fancy any prospective employers etc seeing some of the photos of me on there!!!...which is why I've had to completely hide my profile (existing mates only!)

Got my current gig (through agency) through someone who spotted me on linked in though -- so definitlely worth looking into!!

I've recently had a call about a contract via LinkedIn.

I think it could be useful if you have specialist skills or experience which are hard to find. (the call was about a datacentre relocation PM gig, which my details show I have done lots of, so reasonably specialist, and the guy was really struggling to find someone suitable for it)

I've also noticed that when I log in to LinkedIn, it has a section called "people in your network are hiring:"
There are 3 jobs there right now.

                Alan.

I've made some not related to IT contracting business contacts through facebook. I also have a group about making e-products to sell online and as a result have found some beta testers through it.

I get a lot of invites for network marketing/MLM stuff that I ignore - when I'm not stalking people and recruiting zombies..
