Any good places to visit in Joburg?

Off to fix another site in the collective next week in SA, now I know as a permie I can't afford the kinds of haunts you chaps enjoy but anything I should look out for thats cheap and interesting (apart from riots). Staying in Midrand.

I used to live in Edenvale which is near Modderfontein (East Rand) and went to school there. Modderfontein is the home of the largest dynamite factory in the world (which is why the school is called the Nobel School) and there was the occasional large spectacular explosion. There is a building there which was used during the Boer War and was also occupied by Baden-Powell and is the home of the 14th oldest Scout troop in the world.

      HTH.

Remember the rules of the road.

"When approaching a red traffic light (they call them robots) do not brake, look at the roads and if there are no cars bigger than your then just drive. If there is a bigger car than yours slow a little to time it so you can proceed without stopping.
If you are in broad daylight in heavy traffic and you are forced by the flow of traffic to do a complete stop, leave a car length's room in between your car and the car in front, that way you can do a quick escape if needed.

If you see a human body lying on the road in front of you, keep going, if the body is dead no-one cares, if the body is lying there with intent to make you stop so it can rob and rape you, it will move itself before you hit it, when it hears that you are not braking.

        Enjoy

Has anyone done a risk assessment on your visit?

Have you been to Joburg before? If not some of the comments above are not excesive. I lived in Durban for a fair few months and visited Joburg for a long weekend. The only place I could recommend if you like to do a bit of shopping and a flutter is Monte Casino. Its all in door and safe. Get the hotel to book a taxi to take you there and back.

Do be careful, be vigilent and dont go walking around on your own looking like a tourist.

            Good luck.

On the other hand I worked there for 5 years (in the nineties) and never had any issues at all.

The Airport. Preferably the departures lounge.

Speaking of the airport: There have been reports of gangs operating at the airport, getting information from customs and then following new arrivals and robbing them, so make sure you aren't being followed..
